For generations, American Airlines has helped link the Piedmont Triad to key destinations, growing alongside PTI and the region it serves.

For nearly 80 years, American Airlines has played a consistent role in air service at Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTI), connecting the Triad to major business, leisure, and international markets. As the world’s largest airline by passengers and daily flights, the Fort Worth, Texas–based carrier provides the region with reliable access to destinations across its global network.
American’s service at PTI began on February 20, 1948, during the early expansion of commercial aviation in central North Carolina. Since then, the airline has adjusted its operations in response to passenger demand, fleet changes, and network strategy, maintaining PTI as part of its broader system through industry shifts and its 2013 merger with US Airways. That continuity reflects a long-standing operational partnership and a shared focus on dependable service.

PTI’s location, regional economy, and stable passenger base have supported American’s ability to connect travelers to key hubs, benefiting business travel, tourism, and personal travel throughout the Triad.

“American Airlines has been part of PTI’s operation for decades.,” said Kevin Baker, Executive Director of Piedmont Triad International Airport. “Their service has helped connect the Triad to opportunities across the country and beyond.”
As PTI continues to modernize and support regional growth, American Airlines remains a valued partner within the airport’s balanced air service portfolio—one that reflects both the airport’s history and its future direction.
