Triad Honor Flight Takes Off from PTI, Honoring Local Heroes

Piedmont Triad International Airport is more than a place for takeoffs and landings. It is a gateway for moments that matter. On Wednesday, October 1, PTI proudly welcomed the latest Triad Honor Flight, a day-long mission of gratitude carrying more than 100 local veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorials built in their honor.

This fall’s flight included eight Purple Heart recipients and veterans who served in the Korean War, the Cold War, and the Vietnam War.

A Mission of Thanks

Founded on a simple belief that every veteran deserves to be honored for their service, the Triad Honor Flight has grown into one of the most meaningful traditions in the Piedmont Triad.

“Honor Flight days are the most emotional days of the year for me. Seeing the impact on our veterans warms my heart, and each flight becomes a cherished memory,” said Alison Huber, Executive Director of Triad Honor Flight. “The welcome-home celebration has become a signature part of these flights. It is the homecoming so many never received. I am grateful to play a small part in honoring our Triad veterans in this way.”

Community Sendoff and Homecoming

The day began and ended at PTI, with supporters lining the terminal to cheer veterans during both departure and arrival. The evening welcome-home celebration was especially powerful, filled with flags, applause, and the kind of recognition many veterans missed decades ago.

PTI’s Role in the Region

“We are proud to once again serve as the launch and return point for such a meaningful journey” said Kevin Baker, Executive Director of PTI.   “The welcome home events are some of the most powerful moments that happen at the airport”.

With an annual economic impact approaching $10 billion and thousands of employees working on campus, PTI’s role in the community extends far beyond aviation. Hosting Honor Flight highlights the airport’s mission to connect people as well as places.

How to Get Involved

Triad Honor Flight continues to grow, with multiple flights each year made possible by local donations and volunteers. Anyone interested in nominating a veteran, volunteering as a guardian, or contributing financially can learn more at triadhonorflight.org.
