PTI Operations During Government Shutdown

Oct 1, 2025 | Newsroom

PTI (Piedmont Triad International Airport) does not anticipate any immediate operational changes due to the government shutdown. Commercial airports like PTI remain open, flights continue to operate, and airline schedules are not directly altered. The airport itself is not funded through the federal appropriations process the shutdown affects.

The areas where a shutdown could have an impact are mainly related to federal agencies that operate at the airport:

  • TSA and Customs & Border Protection: Officers are considered essential personnel, so security screening and customs operations continue. However, during prolonged shutdowns, there is a risk of staffing shortages if employees face delayed pay.
  • FAA Operations: Air traffic controllers also remain on duty, but training, hiring, and some support functions may be paused, which can affect efficiency over time.
  • Capital Projects/Grants: A shutdown may temporarily delay the processing of federal aviation grants or funding reimbursements, which can slow down certain long-term projects, but not day-to-day airport functions.

Passengers traveling through PTI should not expect major changes to their flights or airport services if a shutdown happens. The airport remains open and operational, but like the rest of the aviation industry, we monitor developments closely.
