This opportunity is open to artists living or working in the State of North Carolina and in southern Virginia counties that border the Piedmont Triad (see eligibility list below). For the 2026–2027 exhibition period, PTAA is expanding eligibility for large-scale outdoor sculpture to include sculptors residing in South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina.
Exhibition Opportunities
Exhibition sites include:
- A 36-foot wall in the lower-level north baggage claim area
- Two 8-foot walls at the base of the central escalator
- An 8-foot wall section beneath the escalator on the lower level
- The Executive Center on the departure level of the main terminal
- Additional large work locations throughout the departure level
All sites are equipped with secure hanging systems. Artwork must be properly prepared with a wired back or D-rings.
Four Plexiglas pedestals are available:
- Two pedestals: 48” high with 24” w x 24” d x 30” h covers
- One pedestal: 48” high with a 36” w x 36” d x 36” h cover
- One pedestal: 48” high with a 29” w x 26” d x 15” h cover
Pedestals are located in the Meet & Greet areas on the departure level and within the main terminal ticketing areas.
- Eight outdoor sculpture sites are available, all featuring 6-inch-deep concrete pads:
- Five pads approximately 4’ x 7’
- Two pads measuring 10’ x 10’
- One 15’ triangular pad
One ground-level site where the sculpture rests directly on the surface
Budget and Artist Compensation
- Artwork will be loaned to PTAA for a one-year exhibition period.
- Selected 2D and small 3D artists will receive a $100 honorarium.
- Outdoor sculptors will receive $2,000, inclusive of delivery and pickup costs.
All exhibited artwork will be insured by PTAA while on display at PTI Airport. Artwork labels will include the artist’s name and contact information, allowing the public to inquire directly. Artists may replace sold works with another comparable piece, subject to approval.
Artist Eligibility
This Call to Artists is open to individuals who live or work in: North Carolina, specifically the Piedmont Triad counties of Alamance, Caswell, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Guilford, Montgomery, Randolph, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, and Yadkin.
Southern Virginia counties bordering the Piedmont Triad: Grayson, Carroll, Patrick, Henry, Pittsylvania, and Halifax
Eligibility for outdoor sculpture only is extended to artists residing in South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, and Tennessee.
Application Process and Timeline
The Piedmont Triad Airport Authority will manage all application and selection processes.
Key dates include:
- Submission deadline: April 20, 2026 – EXTENDED TO APRIL 27TH 2026
- Selection panel review: May 2026
- Artist notifications: By June 12, 2026
- Interior artwork installation: July/August 2026
- Outdoor sculpture installation: August/September 2026
- Printed Art Walking Tour brochure completion: October 2026
Application Requirements:
Applicants must submit the following:
- 5–10 digital images of available artwork, accompanied by an annotated image list including artist name, title, medium, and dimensions
- A professional résumé
- An artist statement (one page) describing interest in the project, artistic approach, and any connections to the Piedmont Triad region
- A self-addressed, stamped envelope if materials are to be returned
