PTI Art Spotlight – January 2025

Jan 1, 2025 | General

In our PTI parking lot, you’ll find Scorpius, a steel sculpture created by artist Lawrence Feir. Feir’s journey to becoming a full-time artist began after he left the aerospace industry following 9/11. Before that, he worked closely with PTI in the early 1990s, photographing airport expansions and forming a lasting connection with the space. This relationship has continued over the years, with Feir participating in several art exhibitions at PTI.

Feir shared his process for creating Scorpius. He started with a rough sketch and then used a computer program to design the sculpture in detail. From there, he cut over 300 pieces of steel with precision tools and welded them together. Along the way, he faced challenges like making sure all the angles fit perfectly and working through the summer heat in heavy protective gear.

Despite setbacks Feir completed the sculpture after using more than four miles of welding wire. Now, Scorpius stands as a striking example of Feir’s creativity and dedication, greeting visitors at the airport.
