Art Spotlight: A Traveler’s Garden

Located in the central lobby of PTI’s Main Terminal, A Traveler’s Garden is a breathtaking centerpiece that merges North Carolina’s natural beauty with artistic ingenuity. This suspended sculpture, designed by Chapel Hill artists Holly Felice and Gary Caldwell, welcomes visitors to PTI while celebrating the diverse regions of the Tar Heel State.

Hanging much like a chandelier from the ceiling, the sculpture features three tree-like root systems representing North Carolina’s regions: the Coast, the Mountains, and the Piedmont. Each “branch” blossoms with stainless steel flowers native to the area—Azaleas for the Coast, Carolina Lilies for the Mountains, and Dogwoods for the Piedmont. Surrounding these blossoms are delicately crafted butterflies, symbolic of North Carolinians and travelers drawn to the state’s beauty. Five butterfly species, including the Luna Moth and Mourning Cloak, are featured, each intricately detailed and shimmering with life.

Holly Felice notes, A Traveler’s Garden was designed “to wish you well on your journeys and welcome you home.” It serves as a vibrant reminder of the beauty and spirit of North Carolina, ensuring that every visitor leaves PTI inspired and connected.

Next time you’re at PTI, pause beneath this stunning piece to appreciate its details, discover its stories, and feel the warmth of North Carolina’s hospitality.
