Cara Bevan – Bringing Childhood Stories to Life

This July, PTI Airport features the work of North Carolina artist Cara Bevan. Located inside Door 3 on the Departure Level in a display case, just before the Observation Deck, the display introduces two handcrafted sculptures and children’s books.

Cara is a full-time, self-taught artist who specializes in whimsically realistic gourd sculptures, paintings, and illustrations. Every sculpture begins as a simple gourd, which she transforms with wire, paper clay, epoxy clay, wood, glass, and other mixed media, then hand-paints each piece with acrylics. Her passion lies in creating expressive characters packed with personality, intricate details, and storytelling.

The Hoozals Hear the Call

This sculpture is Cara’s own original creation, inspired by the world of Dr. Seuss. Rather than copying an existing Seuss character, she imagined an entirely new story and cast of characters. She was inspired by Dr. Seuss’s legacy as an environmental and political activist who used creativity to push for positive change.

Where the Wild Things Are

This sculpture was inspired by Maurice Sendak’s, Where the Wild Things Are. As a kid, Cara was fascinated by monsters, strange creatures, and big adventures. Cara designed her own wild monster after studying the book and reimagined the child wearing a red dragon costume instead of the wolf suit. Together, the pair roars, plays, and adventures, capturing the same joyful energy that has inspired generations of readers.

Art That Inspires Play

Cara hopes visitors will reconnect with the stories that shaped their childhoods and rediscover the joy of imagination.

“I hope viewers will remember the stories from their own childhoods and ignite their sense of whimsy and play. It’s still alive in us and we can sing, roar, and laugh to make our days brighter. Stay playful everyone—let the wild rumpus start!”

Whether you’re heading out on a trip or welcoming someone home, make sure to stop by the display and check out Cara Bevan’s incredible sculptures! Learn more about Cara and her work at www.carabevan.com.
