Housculptures by Mary Vivo
You can find this month’s featured artwork on the Departures Level near the observation area at stops 21A, 21B, 22A, and 22B on the PTI Art Walking Tour. The pieces are by artist Mary Vivo, who creates miniature 3D models she calls Housculptures.
Vivo began making Housculptures after building dollhouses and wanting to work on smaller structures with more detail and context. Her work highlights the importance and simplicity of familiar buildings and the scenes around them.
Many of her pieces come from personal memories, including Brooklyn’s Nathan’s Famous, Richmond’s Byrd Theatre, and New York City’s 34th Street Station. She has also recreated sets from shows she grew up watching, such as The Swamp from MAS*H and the apartment from The Honeymooners.
A detailed piece like the Byrd Theatre can take around 50 hours to complete. Her work has been featured in galleries and publications and has earned recognition, including a Best in Show 3D award.
Vivo hopes travelers will pause as they pass through the terminal, recognize a scene, or discover something new.
Her PTI pieces include:
-
21A “The Swamp”
-
21B “The Special World’s Fair”
-
22A “Harvey’s Barber Shop 1972”
-
22B “The Byrd Theater”
