The Greensboro-High Point Airport Authority was created by the North Carolina General Assembly to own, operate and manage the airport in Guilford County. On April 22, 1942 the Airport Authority held its inaugural meeting. Greensboro department store executive Joseph T. Martin was elected the Authority’s first chairman. High Point resident R.T. Amos became Vice Chairman and Caesar Cone of Greensboro began a 26-year career as Secretary.
In 1985 the Airport Authority membership is expanded to seven, with the new representative being appointed by Forsyth County Commissioners and the Winston Salem City Council.
The Airport Authority was officially re-named the Piedmont Triad Airport Authority in 1987. Its members are appointed by Guilford County – 3 members, Forsyth County – 1 member, Greensboro City Council – 1 member, High Point City Council – 1 member and the Winston Salem City Council – 1 member.
